OUR STORY

PRAGMATISM FOR A PLANETARY PROBLEM

Carbon removal is essential to fighting climate change. While 5 to 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide need to be removed from the atmosphere annually by 2050, today the world removes less than 0.001% of that. We need to do more.

Combining pragmatism and science, Graphyte has created a carbon removal solution that accelerates progress in the race against climate change. Carbon Casting seamlessly fuses nature's ability to capture carbon with the reliability and durability of engineering, setting a new standard for carbon dioxide removal.

After decades of working in the climate change space, we were committed to finding a better way to remove carbon. We knew that energy was critical. That’s why we started with the power of nature.

“CARBON CASTING LETS NATURE EFFICIENTLY DO THE WORK OF CAPTURING CO2, THEN LEVERAGES ENGINEERING TECHNIQUES TO STORE IT PERMANENTLY. IT’S A SOLUTION THAT CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE, THAT WILL CHANGE THE MARKET, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, THAT WILL HELP SAVE THE PLANET.”

THE SCIENCE

HARNESSING THE POWER OF NATURE TO SAVE IT

A key reason carbon removal can be expensive and hard to scale is high energy requirements, so we returned to nature’s proven, efficient process for capturing carbon from the atmosphere—photosynthesis.

Graphyte realized that the carbon captured in plant matter could be preserved by eliminating the causes of biomass decomposition—microbes and the water they depend on. Drying the biomass eliminates microbes, and impermeable barriers prevent water and gas from restarting the decomposition process.

 CARBON CASTING

Carbon Casting is a new approach to carbon removal that takes readily available biomass—such as natural timber and crop residues—sterilizes and dries it into dense carbon blocks protected by a long-lasting polymer barrier, and then stores it in monitored, underground storage sites. It preserves nearly all the carbon stored in the biomass while also consuming little energy.

Combining photosynthesis with practical engineering, Graphyte’s Carbon Casting provides an immediate pathway for billions of tons of low-cost carbon removal with durability over 1,000 years.

OUR METHOD

RAISING THE CURTAIN ON CARBON CASTING

Carbon Casting is a new approach to carbon removal that leverages readily available biomass, such as residues from timber and farming operations. We dry and compress it into dense carbon blocks protected by an environmentally-safe, impermeable barrier, and then store these blocks in underground sites with state-of-the-art monitoring. Carbon Casting preserves nearly all the carbon captured in the biomass and consumes very little energy in the process.

Combining photosynthesis with practical engineering, Graphyte’s Carbon Casting technology provides an immediate pathway for billions of tons of low-cost, permanent carbon removal.

PERMANENT CARBON REMOVAL AT SCALE: OUR 5-STEP PROCESS

Graphyte_5 Step Process Graph_Icons Only_November 8 20233.png

COLLECT

We use by-products of the timber and agriculture industries, which would otherwise be burned or left to decompose.

DRY

We dry this biomass, to eliminate microbes and the water they depend on, stopping decomposition.

CONDENSE

The inert biomass is condensed into dense blocks, enabling effective storage.

WRAP

Carbon blocks are protected by an environmentally-safe, impermeable barrier to ensure that decomposition does not restart.

STORE + MONITOR

Blocks are stored in state-of-the-art sites with sensors and tracers, enabling robust long-term monitoring. Storage sites can then be used as solar farms or working agricultural land.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

A SCALABLE PATHWAY TO ZERO CARBON RICE

P.J. Haynie is a fifth-generation Black farmer from Virginia. P.J. and his family have been farming in the United States for over 150 years, growing rice, soybeans, winter wheat, and other crops. The Haynie family farms thousands of acres of land across the U.S. and co-owns a rice mill in Arkansas.

Sustainability is at the core of Haynie Family Foods’ mission and starts with the way they grow their rice and other crops. Haynie Family Foods uses well-established practices to maximize efficiencies and minimize carbon emissions, including cover crops and no-till farming practices. They use a process called alternative wetting and drying (AWD), which significantly reduces water use and can reduce methane emissions by up to 50% over alternative production methods.

Graphyte is partnering with Haynie Family Foods to procure rice hulls produced as a by-product of the rice milling process. These rice hulls have low value uses today, primarily as animal bedding or feed. The majority of the carbon stored in these rice hulls ends up back in the atmosphere in the form of methane or carbon dioxide. Graphyte’s Carbon Casting process offers a more sustainable end use for these rice hulls which permanently removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In partnership with Haynie Family Foods, we are helping produce some of the lowest carbon rice in the world.
